How to Build a Cardboard Fire Engine

Cardboard Fire Engine

Start with three boxes: 1 large regular box; 1 washer/dryer box (flaps removed); and one refrigerator box (flaps removed). Make cuts on the dotted lines.

Step 1
1* - Leave flap on to decorate as a dashboard later.
2* - Use for front bumper.
3* - Save for making braces (see below).
4* - Save for making rear bumper.
Step 2

Insert rivets at places indicated by the black dots in the drawing above.
Cut out the cab windows as indicated by the dotted line.

Sampler Rivet Kit

Sampler Rivet Kit - $24.95

This rivet kit can be used to build any of the project plans featured on my website. Includes all three sizes of rivets for connecting multiple layers of cardboard of various thicknesses. This kit includes:

  • 1 Box of Long Rivets - (100 pcs./50 sets)
  • 1 Box of Medium Rivets - (100 pcs./50 sets)
  • 1 Bag of Mini Rivets - (100 pcs./50 sets)
  • 1 Rivet Remover
  • 1 Utility Knife

Now it's time to make four braces: two for the front box and two for the back box.

Use rivets to attach the braces in position as indicated below.
I recommend four rivets for each brace.

Finish your fire engine by adding decoration:
  • Use shoeboxes for sirens
  • Paint on wheels, headlights, grill, water pump, etc.
  • Decorate the dashboard with gauges, paper plate steering wheel, etc.
